TURNS & SPINS TECHNIQUE
For salsa, but applicaple in a lot of dances.
Turns and spins solo practice for all levels.
Can be taken as weekly practice as well as drop in workshop.
Our general goal is to make turning effortless and enjoyable so that the turns will be a natural part of your dance.
In this class you will work on different techniques, placement, stability, balance, strength and ability to orient in space.
BODY MOVEMENT, AFROLATIN/SALSA
Solo. What to wear: barefoot, socks or dance shoes
Body movement training is one of the most central practices to any salsa/afrolatin dancer, from beginners to professionals. Anyone can join this class and everyone will work on their own level of detail.
Most of the movements are a resource in a wide variety of dances. We also work specifically on latin motion specific movement patterns and “advanced basics” (meaning even professionals train basics but with another level of detail).
Regular Body Movement class also keeps the body prepared for dance and reduces risk for injuries. Except for technique, focus on sensing and body awareness is promoted. Exercises improve technique, coordination, range of motion, strengthen the body, reduce tension, increase flow of energy and promote body connectivity.
BARRE
Open level.
Similar to ballet barre but without barre: class consist of a flow of simple but not easy exercises (such as balance training, releves, plies, tendus, degages, ronde de jambes, fondus, frappes, developpes, attitudes, grande battements) The goal of this class is to have a strong body and condition for dance, for example perfect for salsa/tango dancers etc who perform/compete. Also for dancers who have taken ballet before in life. With this training (if you do it regularly!) you will also have a really good base if you take ballet class.
FLEXIBILITY
Dynamic flexibility training for dance.
Everyone is welcome to join. Anyone of any background/ any age can become more flexible and elastic.
Regular practice increases the range of motion that we can use in dance. To safely make use of our flexibility we always combine with strength, balance, body awareness and breath. In each excercise listen to your body.
We use the group as a factor to make the training more effective but never compare yourself to others, only with your own progress.
This class is optimal to take together with “Barre” the hour before.
SHINES & STYLE SALSA ON2 SOLO
Leo leads this class with his extensive experience, authentic style and musicality.
Class is based on Leos choreographed combinations that are often spiced up by improvised parts inspired by music.
This class is recommended to anyone who already is dancing salsa.
The essence of the class is to have fun, to express ourselves, explore and develop our own style. In this process mistakes are welcomed. If you don t remember all steps it is normal, with time you will recognize and will be able to remember more and more.
Advanced dancers will work on refining their own unique style, technique, musicality and add layers of improvised elements into the structure of the shines.
Shines practice will allow you to have tools to be present in your toolbox, both to improve your individual dance (“shines”) and your partnerwork ( for example through better footwork and awareness of timing) .
Music is played for most of the duration the class, with breaks to learn new combinations and to answer questions.
FUSION SALSA ON2 SOLO
Level: “dansvana”/advanced.
In this class we work on short choreographies by Jojo that will change from class to class. Class is salsa on2 -based and incorporates elements from a variety of dance styles such as latinjazz, “afro”, elements of classical technique or contemporary moves. The idea is that work on the techniques is mainly done in the technique classes such as Body Movement, Turns technique etc, and in Fusion class there is chance to apply everything and dance out. We try to dance throughout the whole class, except for short pauses for explanations and corrections. This class also includes some elements of training for show/performance: towards the end we dance in two groups, try out some stage-elements, and at the very end we will film the dance (for those who want).
FLOORWORK
Practice and technique. Based on flow of exercises.
What to wear: long sleeves and socks recommended.
Floorwork is used in very many dance forms, for example in salsa often seen as part of performances and fusions.
Floorwork is an important part of becoming a better mover and also a way to take care of your body. Floorwork includes many functional and developmental movement patterns and helps us rediscover movements that we might have lost.
You will discover movements from another perspective, use your feet in another way, and explore organic patterns such as spirals and transitions. We also work on mobility, relaxation in movement, movement efficiency and relationship to the floor.
DANCERS FEET
Training with focus on our feet because the more we dance the stronger feet (and lower leg) we need. Also very important if we dance in heels.
In socks and barefoot.
A flow of excersices also using some tools (at the studio).
We work on articulation, strength and mobility. The excersices also improve balance and stability.
The goal is to improve function (there is a lot to discover!), increase awareness of the feet, more developed use of feet in dance, and to prevent problems.
If you have problems with you feet that are rooted in passive toes, weaknesses in the feet or lower leg, or habits of misplacement, the class is likely to do good for you. Please make sure to listen to your body, make adjustments you need and check with your physiotherapist (e.g.) about your individual needs if you have injuries.
ARMWORK SALSA
Open level. Solo. Everyone welcome.
Similar to what often is called “armstyling”.
Focus on salsa/ afrolatin but also variations for versatility, useful in many dances.
We train techniques for arms through short exercises and drill them until movements feel natural and can be integrated to your own expression. Class can be taken as drop in or as weekly practice. We work on initiation of movements, coordination, dynamics, flow and to increase repertoire of arm movements.
TANGO BARRE
Technique training that is somewhat similar to “tango technique training” but we will use a ballet barre as a “partner” and work with short choreographed combinations (no need to memorize a lot like in a regular choreography class). In this class we focus more on the combination of the movements and dancing to the music rather than pure technique training (even though that is also part of the class).
TANGO TECHNIQUE TRAINING SOLO
Technique training that consist of a flow of structured escercises (“simple but not easy”), with as little breaks as possible. Take control of your own development and find your own opinion about your dance and your preferences. This class gives the amount of repetitions that is usually not possible in other types of tango classes, while paying attention to the details. We work on movements such as dissociation, spirals, weight transfer, pivots, ochos, giros, boleos, ganchos, variety of “embellishments”, enrosques… The exercises are a challenge for balance and stability (especially if you are in heels) but this will get better with time and will help you a lot in partner dancing.
Everyone is welcome. Both experienced tango dancers but also beginners who are experienced in other dances (when you start partner dancing you are already familiar with the movements and can focus on connection to your partner and music) . The instructions will mostly be while we are moving.
You can wear flat dance shoes or heels.
